Math Support began over twenty years ago after founder Peggy Cannistraci felt inadequate trying to help her own children achieve in mathematics. She found teaching them would end more times than not in frustration for both herself and her daughters. This was in part due to the complexities of the parent/child relationship and due to the difficulties a parent faces knowing what is grade-level appropriate.
Peggy decided to head back to school to attain her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, a Master’s degree in Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction for Secondary Education and a Clear California Teaching Credential with a vision of supporting students who needed a more personalized setting.
She began supplementing mathematics instruction for a few students at the secondary level with a vision of supporting and adding to the opportunities students have attending public schools. After establishing at tutoring center, her first proposal to the district was offering courses for credit over the summer; courses that were not available through the district. Within a few years she founded the first supplement private school in the Western United States, Math Support Services was the first to be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Commission on International and Trans regional Accreditation. The school became recognized by the William S. Hart High School District in the Santa Clarita Valley and offered transferable mathematics courses such as Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Today, Math Support has expanded to also offer transferrable high school science classes. What started with a few students has multiplied exponentially, resulting in thousands of students receiving instruction over the years at the Math Support Services facility in Santa Clarita, California. In addition to courses for credit, students attend tutoring, PSAT, SAT & ACT preparation courses, and college planning workshops.
